Gratitude: Feeling It
for when you know but can't feel it
You know, somewhere, that your life contains things worth being grateful for.
And yet.
That gap, between knowing and feeling, is not a character flaw. It is not ingratitude. It is what happens when the body is tired, or the mind is heavy, or the distance between your circumstances and your emotional state has grown too wide to easily cross. It happens to everyone. It happened to those who had every reason to be grateful and could not, for a time, find their way to it.
You cannot think your way into feeling grateful. Gratitude is not a conclusion you reach. It is a sensation, and sensations come through the body, not through the mind.
So try this instead. Find something to touch. Something with a texture, rough or smooth, warm or cool. Put your hand on it. Feel it properly for a moment, the way you might if you had never touched anything before. Let your attention go completely into your hand.
You are here. You have a hand that can feel things. You are in a body that is, right now, doing the complicated and mostly thankless work of keeping you alive.
It is not much. It is also everything.
