It's Yours

find the true meaning of Home
Your home does not need to look like anything in particular. Not like the images you have been shown of what a home should look like. Not like your neighbour's, or your mother's, or the version that lives in the back of your mind as the standard against which yours always falls slightly short. It does not need to be finished, or styled, or organised in any specific way. It needs to be yours. That is a different thing entirely. A home that is yours has the things in it that matter to you, arranged in the way that works for you, at whatever standard of tidiness you can actually sustain. It has your smell. It has the particular quiet or noise of your life in it. It is not performing for anyone. There is a pressure, and it comes from everywhere, to make domestic space into something presentable. Something that could be photographed. Something that signals a certain kind of life being successfully lived. That pressure is worth noticing, and then worth setting down. Those who kept homes before you did not keep them for an audience. They kept them as the base from which life was lived. Functional. Warm. Theirs. Your home is allowed to be exactly what it is right now. Imperfect, in progress, entirely sufficient. Come in. Close the door. This is your place.
