What You're Really Afraid Of
It was never failure
Some people lose before they start. Not from lack of ability, not from circumstances, not from bad timing.
From too much imagination about what winning might cost them.
The fear isn't failure. Most people know how to fail. They have practice at it, language for it, ways to absorb it and carry on.
What they don't have practice at is succeeding. At being seen to have succeeded. At the exposure of it, the permanence of it, the way it closes certain doors behind you. You cannot succeed and then pretend you were always just passing through.
Success asks something of you that failure never does. It asks you to stand in it. To be it. To stop being the person who might, one day, and become the person who did.
That is frightening in a way that is hard to name. So most people don't name it. They call it timing, or circumstances, or waiting until they're ready. And the waiting goes on.
The ones who never try are not cautious. They are not wise. They are not waiting for the right moment.
They are losing in a quieter way, and calling it something else.
